OKX Europe has acquired a Malta-based firm holding a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II) license, advancing its efforts to offer regulated derivatives across Europe, the company announced on Wednesday.

The acquired entity is expected to begin operations later this year, pending approval from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). OKX did not disclose the name of the firm it purchased.

With its MiFID II license, OKX will be able to offer regulated derivatives products and services to institutional clients across the European Economic Area, which includes the 27 EU member states, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

According to the announcement, this move further strengthens OKX’s position as the third-largest exchange by market cap in the EU. The company previously secured a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from Malta in January.
