⚽ Tether Seeks Board Seat at Juventus After Acquiring Over 10% Stake

Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin USDT, has taken a significant step toward greater influence in European football after acquiring more than 10% ownership in Juventus Football Club. With this stake, Tether has become the second-largest shareholder in the iconic Serie A club and is now pushing for a seat on the board of directors as well as participation in the club’s upcoming capital raise.

📈 Tether’s Growing Investment in Juventus

Tether’s involvement with Juventus began earlier in 2025 when it purchased an initial 5% stake. In April, the company doubled down, investing a reported €128 million ($137 million) to surpass the 10% threshold. According to statements from Tether, this investment is part of a broader strategy to integrate blockchain-backed innovation and financial transparency into traditional sectors such as sports and entertainment.

“Juventus is more than a club. It’s an institution with global reach,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “Our investment reflects a commitment to support world-class organizations that align with our vision of financial freedom and technological progress.”

🧾 Request for Board Seat & Capital Raise Involvement

In May, Tether submitted a formal request to participate in Juventus’s forthcoming capital increase and to be granted representation on the club’s board. While Juventus has not yet confirmed a decision, sources close to the matter report that a shareholder meeting is being planned, and discussions with Tether are ongoing.

The capital raise is seen as critical for Juventus, which is seeking to recover from recent financial struggles that include significant losses, debt burdens, and the aftermath of financial irregularities that led to board resignations in 2022.

🏟️ Strategic Alignment—or Clash?

Tether’s push into Juventus signals more than just financial backing. The stablecoin issuer has indicated it would bring expertise in blockchain, artificial intelligence, and digital asset integration—areas Juventus has only lightly explored through earlier ventures into fan tokens and NFTs.

However, Juventus remains controlled by Exor, the investment firm of the Agnelli family, which holds approximately 65% of the voting rights. While Tether’s 10% stake makes it a powerful minority voice, it does not threaten Exor’s majority control. Still, it does give Tether leverage to influence strategy, especially if it joins the board.

Some analysts have described Tether’s move as a modernizing force that could disrupt the traditional governance and operational structures of a legacy football club.

“It’s a fascinating dynamic,” said Marco Bellini, a sports finance analyst at CalcioEconomics. “Tether’s capital is welcome, but its agenda could run into resistance if not well-aligned with Juventus’s sporting and cultural identity.”

💸 Why Juventus? Why Now?

Tether’s pursuit of Juventus comes amid rising interest in real-world asset investment from crypto-native firms. With USDT’s market cap exceeding $112 billion, and Tether reporting $13 billion in profits in 2023, the company has been aggressively expanding its portfolio beyond crypto into AI firms, Bitcoin mining, energy, and now, European football.

Juventus, meanwhile, presents an attractive opportunity. Despite recent financial turbulence, it remains Italy’s most decorated football club, boasting a massive global fanbase and significant brand equity.

🧩 What Comes Next?

A shareholder meeting is expected to take place in the coming weeks, where Tether’s request for a board seat and role in the capital increase will likely be discussed. The outcome could signal a new era for Juventus—one that blends traditional football leadership with cutting-edge financial innovation.

Regardless of whether Tether secures a seat at the table, its influence is now undeniably part of Juventus’s financial ecosystem—and a signal to other crypto firms watching from the sidelines.
