XRPL’s Ethereum-Compatible Sidechain Launching Q2 2025

XRPL’s Ethereum-Compatible Sidechain Launching Q2 2025

Ripple representatives—Jaazi Cooper (Product Management) and CTO David Schwartz—announced at APEX 2025 in Singapore that the XRPL sidechain, fully compatible with Ethereum’s Virtual Machine (EVM), is set to launch its mainnet in the current quarter (Q2 2025).

🔍 What It Is & Why It Matters

  • EVM compatibility means developers can deploy Ethereum-based smart contracts (Solidity, MetaMask, Truffle, etc.) directly on XRPL’s sidechain without rewriting code.

  • This sidechain will use wrapped XRP (wXRP) as its gas token, bridged via Axelar, enabling seamless asset movement between Ethereum-style dApps and XRPL’s settlement layer.

  • It's built on a Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus mechanism aiming for high throughput (1,000+ TPS) and ultra-low transaction fees (<$0.01).

📈 Testnet Momentum: A Strong Signal

  • Early this year, the testnet went live and has already attracted 87+ new participants—none of whom were previously aligned with XRP—to build infrastructure, apps, and demand-generation solutions.

  • Peersyst Technologies suggests this could be “possibly the biggest onboarding in XRP history” once the mainnet launches.

💡 Developer & User Impacts

  • Developers: Can now bring Ethereum dApps (DeFi protocols, DEXs, NFTs, yield platforms) into the XRPL ecosystem using familiar tools, bypassing tedious rewrites.

  • Users: Will benefit from fast, low-cost transactions while interacting with smart contracts, potentially generating yield via DeFi tools like liquidity pools.

  • Ecosystem growth: The introduction of wXRP fees adds new utility and demand for XRP, tying its value more directly to on-chain activity.

🧭 Strategic Context

  • XRPL has historically excelled at fast and affordable payments but lacked native smart contract support.

  • With this sidechain, XRPL now competes directly with Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche, etc., offering similar programmability but with lower costs and higher speeds.

  • Ripple’s approach avoids altering XRPL’s core protocol, preserving its reliability while enabling powerful extensions through sidechain architecture.

The Q2 2025 mainnet of XRPL’s EVM sidechain is a pivotal expansion—bridging XRPL’s performant, cost-effective payments layer with Ethereum-scale smart contract power. The testnet’s rapid developer uptake (87+ new entities) suggests strong community interest. If the mainnet sustains this momentum, XRPL could become a prime destination for DeFi and dApp expansion, offering a compelling hybrid alternative in the blockchain landscape.
