Whale Sell-Offs and Token Unlocks Push Solana Below $150 Despite Strong Network Fundamentals
In late February 2025, a notable whale unstaked approximately 1.37 million SOL, valued at around $198 million, transferring a portion to major exchanges like Binance and Coinbase. This move raised concerns about a potential sell-off, contributing to a nearly 40% price decline over the month, bringing SOL down to approximately $140.54.
Additionally, Solana's transfer volume saw a dramatic decrease, plummeting from $1.99 billion in November 2024 to just $14.57 million by late February 2025, indicating waning investor confidence and reduced network activity.
Upcoming Token Unlock and Ecosystem Challenges
Adding to the bearish sentiment, Solana is set to release 11.2 million SOL tokens on March 1, 2025, as part of the FTX bankruptcy proceedings. This influx, valued at approximately $2 billion, is anticipated to exert additional selling pressure on the market.
Compounding the situation, Solana's Total Value Locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols has declined, remaining below $10 billion since February 22, 2025. This decrease reflects reduced engagement and liquidity within the ecosystem.
Technical Indicators and Whale Behavior
Technical analysis reveals that SOL has fallen below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, signaling a bearish trend. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicators also suggest continued downward pressure, with potential support levels identified between $128 and $134.
Despite the prevailing bearish outlook, some whales have shown signs of accumulation. For instance, a significant whale purchased 50,000 SOL, worth approximately $6.77 million, indicating confidence in a potential rebound.
Solana's recent price decline below $150 is attributed to substantial whale outflows, decreased network activity, and impending token unlocks. While these factors contribute to a bearish market sentiment, observed whale accumulation suggests that some investors anticipate a potential recovery. As the market navigates these developments, Solana's performance will likely hinge on its ability to restore investor confidence and reinvigorate ecosystem engagement.
