Trump Pushes for Deeper Crypto Integration into U.S. Economy via Mortgages and 401(k)s
President Donald Trump is advancing a bold economic strategy to embed cryptocurrency more firmly within the structure of the American financial system. His administration is now targeting two of the most significant pillars of personal finance in the U.S.—home mortgages and 401(k) retirement plans—to bring digital assets into the mainstream.
Crypto in 401(k) Plans: A New Frontier for Retirement Savings
Earlier this year, the Department of Labor reversed a previous Biden-era advisory that discouraged retirement plan fiduciaries from offering crypto investment options in 401(k)s. The Trump administration's new position removes that caution and returns discretion to employers and fiduciaries.
Now, the administration is preparing a broader executive order that would authorize the inclusion of a wide range of alternative assets—including cryptocurrencies, gold, real estate, private equity, and hedge funds—within retirement plans. The goal is to modernize retirement investing and provide Americans with access to high-growth opportunities traditionally limited to institutional investors.
Industry analysts suggest this change will likely be implemented first through employer-sponsored brokerage windows, where self-directed investors can choose from a broader range of options. Financial advisors continue to recommend that crypto allocations remain limited—typically between 1% to 2% of a retirement portfolio—due to market volatility and long-term risk factors.
Crypto and Mortgages: Risky Innovation or Forward Thinking?
Simultaneously, the administration is exploring ways to use cryptocurrency holdings in mortgage underwriting. A proposal under review would allow federal housing agencies such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to treat crypto assets as valid reserves when evaluating mortgage applicants.
This proposal has drawn strong opposition from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that the volatile nature of digital currencies could destabilize the housing market and increase risks of borrower default. Critics also question whether cryptocurrency’s speculative nature aligns with the long-term stability required for mortgage financing.
Concerns have also been raised over potential conflicts of interest, with some lawmakers accusing Trump of personally benefiting from policies that favor the crypto sector, given his public association with certain digital tokens and crypto-friendly events.
Executive Action and Strategic Crypto Reserves
This push is part of a broader national effort to shape the future of digital finance. In January 2025, Trump issued an executive order nullifying previous crypto-related guidance and banning the creation of a U.S. central bank digital currency (CBDC). That same order established a presidential working group tasked with creating a national digital asset policy framework.
In March, a second executive order created the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and Digital Asset Stockpile, using confiscated assets to build a government-held crypto reserve—further signaling the administration’s commitment to positioning the U.S. as a leader in blockchain-based finance.
Political Divide: Innovation vs. Oversight
Republican lawmakers and crypto advocates are praising these initiatives as long-overdue steps toward modernizing America’s financial systems. They argue that expanding access to crypto will empower individuals, encourage innovation, and help the U.S. stay competitive globally in emerging fintech markets.
Democrats, however, are calling for caution. They warn that the lack of clear regulation, combined with crypto’s history of fraud and instability, could expose Americans to serious financial risks—especially in retirement and housing, where long-term security is paramount.
The administration is expected to issue further announcements this week regarding crypto access in retirement accounts, while Senate Democrats continue their inquiries into the potential risks of using crypto in mortgage underwriting.
As the debate intensifies, the direction of U.S. digital asset policy remains at a historic crossroads—with the potential to reshape how Americans save, invest, and borrow for generations to come.
