Top Democrats Intensify Probe Into Trump’s Crypto Ties Amid Bribery Concerns

Top Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are intensifying their scrutiny of President Donald Trump's involvement in cryptocurrency ventures, citing potential risks of bribery and corruption. Lawmakers, including Reps. Jamie Raskin, Joe Morelle, and Gerald Connolly, have formally requested the Treasury Department to provide any suspicious activity reports (SARs) related to platforms like WinRed, America PAC, and Trump family's cryptocurrency businesses.

The concerns stem from allegations that President Trump and his associates may be leveraging their positions to benefit their crypto enterprises. For instance, Trump's launch of the $TRUMP cryptocurrency coin, which offered top purchasers exclusive access to a private gala at his Washington D.C. golf club, has been criticized as a potential pay-to-play scheme . Ethics watchdogs warn that such initiatives allow for anonymous financial contributions that could influence U.S. politics.

Further complicating matters, former Trump administration commerce secretary Howard Lutnick's ties to cryptocurrency firm Tether and its operations in El Salvador have raised ethical concerns. Tether, which has faced legal challenges including allegations of insufficient asset backing and money laundering, relocated to El Salvador for tax and regulatory leniency. Lutnick's involvement with Tether and facilitation of significant investments in pro-Trump platforms like Rumble have drawn attention from ethics watchdogs and regulators.

In response to these developments, House Democrats are advocating for legislation to prevent top U.S. officials from profiting from personal meme coins. Representative Sam Liccardo introduced the Modern Emoluments and Malfeasance Enforcement (MEME) Act, aiming to ban the President, Vice President, members of Congress, senior officials, and their families from issuing, sponsoring, or endorsing digital assets like the TRUMP meme token.

These actions underscore the growing concern among lawmakers about the ethical implications of intertwining political power with personal financial interests in the burgeoning cryptocurrency industry. The situation continues to evolve as investigations and legislative efforts seek to address potential conflicts of interest and ensure transparency in government dealings with digital assets.
