PEPE Slides 5% as Hype Wanes, Despite Elon Musk's April Endorsement

Altcoins Lose Ground as Bitcoin Dominance Climbs Above 65%

Pepe (PEPE), one of the most prominent memecoins in the current market cycle, has dropped by approximately 5% in the past 24 hours, continuing a week-long downtrend. Despite a brief resurgence in April following a social media nod from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the token has struggled to maintain its momentum amid a broader shift in crypto market sentiment.

As of June 26, 2025, PEPE is trading at $0.0000102, down from its monthly high of $0.0000127. The token’s market capitalization now stands at roughly $4.3 billion, placing it well below its peak when it briefly entered the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market cap earlier this year.

Musk Bump Fades Fast

In April, Elon Musk posted a meme referencing the PEPE frog character, sparking a surge in trading volume and price. While this initially triggered a 35% rally, the effect proved short-lived. The token has since retraced most of those gains, underscoring the ephemeral nature of memecoin hype without sustained news, development, or community expansion.

Bitcoin Dominance Hits 65.3%

Adding pressure to altcoins like PEPE is the rising dominance of Bitcoin. According to CoinMarketCap data, Bitcoin’s market dominance has now reached 65.3%—its highest level since October 2021. This metric measures Bitcoin’s share of the total crypto market capitalization and is a widely followed indicator of investor sentiment. When dominance rises, it typically reflects a flight to safety, with traders rotating capital out of riskier assets into Bitcoin.

This market rotation has coincided with heightened regulatory uncertainty, slower institutional interest in altcoins, and a narrowing of liquidity across smaller-cap projects.

Altcoin Market Struggles

The broader altcoin market has also taken a hit. Ethereum (ETH) is down 2.1% in the same 24-hour period, while other meme-related tokens like Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) have posted losses of 3.7% and 4.2%, respectively.

PEPE’s poor price performance is not an isolated case but rather part of a larger trend of declining memecoin interest. Google Trends data for "PEPE coin" and related search terms have dropped over 60% since early May, reflecting declining retail curiosity.

Investor Sentiment Cools

With the U.S. Federal Reserve maintaining a cautious stance on rate cuts and continued geopolitical uncertainty, risk appetite in the crypto space has dampened. In such conditions, traders typically shy away from speculative tokens with high volatility and low utility, opting instead for Bitcoin, which is increasingly viewed as a store of value and hedge asset.

Unless PEPE sees a renewed wave of community-driven initiatives, partnerships, or development updates, its current downtrend may persist. As memecoins continue to rely heavily on virality and social media buzz, a fading narrative poses a serious challenge to sustained growth.

With Bitcoin regaining market dominance and capital consolidating into major assets, the memecoin sector—including PEPE—may face continued headwinds unless the broader sentiment turns decisively risk-on.
