Meta Shareholders Overwhelmingly Reject Bitcoin Treasury Proposal Amid Inflation Concerns
In a decisive move, Meta Platforms Inc. shareholders have overwhelmingly voted against a proposal to incorporate Bitcoin into the company's treasury strategy. Despite Meta's substantial cash reserves—reported at approximately $77.8 billion as of December 2024 —the initiative garnered minimal support among the roughly 5 billion shares that participated in the vote.
The proposal, spearheaded by shareholder Ethan Peck, aimed to explore Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation, citing concerns that the company's cash holdings were being eroded by rising inflation rates. Peck highlighted Bitcoin's significant appreciation over recent years, suggesting it could serve as a more robust store of value compared to traditional cash and bonds.
However, the board and the majority of shareholders remained unconvinced. Their reservations mirror those expressed in similar scenarios, such as Microsoft's recent rejection of a comparable proposal. In that case, the company emphasized the volatility of Bitcoin and the necessity for stable and predictable investments to ensure liquidity and operational funding.
Meta's conservative stance reflects a broader trend among major tech firms, which prioritize financial stability and risk management over speculative investments. While companies like MicroStrategy have embraced Bitcoin as a treasury asset, such moves remain exceptions rather than the norm in the corporate world.
As of June 3, 2025, Meta's stock price stands at $670.90, with a market capitalization of approximately $1.46 trillion. The company's robust financial position and cautious investment approach continue to instill confidence among its investors.
The rejection of the Bitcoin treasury proposal underscores the prevailing cautious sentiment among large corporations regarding cryptocurrency adoption. While the debate over Bitcoin's role in corporate finance persists, Meta's decision highlights the challenges such initiatives face in gaining widespread acceptance.
