Kraken Launches U.S. Derivatives Trading, Eyes Expansion into Commodities and Equities

Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has officially launched a regulated derivatives trading platform in the United States, marking a significant expansion of its product suite as it aims to compete directly with traditional financial institutions and rival crypto firms. The move follows its $1.5 billion acquisition of NinjaTrader, a futures trading platform registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

This launch introduces Kraken Derivatives US, enabling American users to trade cryptocurrency futures listed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), directly within Kraken Pro. The rollout represents Kraken’s first regulated crypto derivatives offering in the U.S., bringing together spot and futures markets on a single platform.

Building a Multi-Asset Future

Kraken’s ambitions stretch beyond digital assets. According to the company, it plans to expand the newly launched platform to include commodity, equity, FX, and fixed-income futures by the end of 2025. This vision aligns with Kraken’s broader goal to become a full-service financial platform that supports traditional and digital assets alike.

The company is already taking steps in that direction. Earlier this year, Kraken introduced commission-free stock and ETF trading in select regions, allowing users to buy tokenized versions of U.S. equities under its “xStocks” offering. This new derivatives infrastructure lays the groundwork for deeper integration of global markets into Kraken’s ecosystem.

Why the NinjaTrader Acquisition Matters

The acquisition of NinjaTrader, finalized earlier this year, gives Kraken access to a sophisticated futures trading infrastructure and a large user base of over two million retail traders. More importantly, NinjaTrader brings with it critical CFTC registrations, including a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) license, which allows Kraken to legally offer regulated futures products in the United States.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Kraken CEO Dave Ripley said the acquisition "accelerates our mission to make advanced financial tools more accessible." He also confirmed that Kraken used in-house AI technology to streamline due diligence and integration processes—an approach that cut down merger preparation time from weeks to just hours.

Strategic Implications

This U.S. launch puts Kraken in a strong position amid intensifying competition. Coinbase, for instance, is ramping up its derivatives presence through international partnerships and its recent interest in acquiring Deribit. Meanwhile, Binance, though facing regulatory hurdles in the U.S., continues to dominate perpetual futures markets abroad.

With its U.S.-based, regulated futures platform, Kraken offers a compliant alternative for institutional and retail traders seeking exposure to crypto derivatives within the legal framework of American financial regulation.

Industry analysts say this move could also attract hedge funds and asset managers seeking to hedge or speculate on crypto price movements without relying on offshore platforms.

What's Next for Kraken?

Kraken’s roadmap includes:

  • Launching commodity and equity futures by Q4 2025.

  • Expanding tokenized stock trading into new regions.

  • Leveraging NinjaTrader’s trading tools for cross-asset portfolio management.

  • Deepening its regulatory ties in the U.S., UK, EU, and Australia.

Kraken’s entry into regulated U.S. derivatives trading marks a major turning point for the crypto industry. As regulatory scrutiny tightens and the line between traditional finance and digital assets continues to blur, exchanges like Kraken that can operate compliantly across both domains are poised to shape the next generation of global markets.

By merging crypto innovation with traditional financial infrastructure, Kraken is no longer just a crypto exchange—it’s positioning itself as a next-gen multi-asset trading powerhouse.
