King Dollar Falters as Bitcoin Climbs Toward Sound Money Supremacy
Bitcoin has experienced a significant surge, reaching an all-time high of $111,192 on May 22, 2025, marking a 50% increase from its April lows. This rally has been driven by factors such as increased institutional adoption, favorable regulatory developments, and a strategic shift in investor sentiment. Notably, the U.S. government's establishment of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in March 2025, capitalizing on the Treasury's forfeited Bitcoin holdings, has further bolstered confidence in the cryptocurrency's long-term viability .
Despite this impressive rally, Bitcoin has yet to reclaim its all-time high against traditional safe-haven assets like gold and silver. As of May 22, 2025, Bitcoin's price is approximately $111,192, while gold is trading at $305.82 per share of the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD), and silver is at $30.51 per share of the iShares Silver Trust (SLV). This places Bitcoin's market capitalization at around $2.3 trillion, compared to gold's estimated $13.7 trillion .
The current Bitcoin-to-gold ratio stands at 35.2, indicating that one Bitcoin can purchase 35.2 ounces of gold. While this is an improvement from previous years, it remains below the peak ratio of 37 reached in 2021 . This suggests that, despite Bitcoin's impressive gains, it has not yet surpassed gold in terms of value retention and investor confidence.
While Bitcoin's recent performance underscores its potential as a digital asset, it has yet to fully displace traditional safe-haven assets like gold and silver. The evolving regulatory landscape and increasing institutional adoption may continue to drive Bitcoin's growth, but its status as a superior store of value remains to be fully realized.
