JPMorgan Report: Bitcoin Miners with HPC Exposure Struggle as Profitability Declines for Third Consecutive Month
JPMorgan's latest report reveals that Bitcoin miners with high-performance computing (HPC) exposure have underperformed Bitcoin for the third consecutive month. This downturn is attributed to a 6% increase in the network's hashrate, which has outpaced the growth in Bitcoin's price, thereby squeezing mining profitability.
Despite a 6% rise in the network's hashrate, reaching 643 exahashes per second in September, miners' daily block reward revenue per exahash per second declined by 6% to $42,100. Gross profit from these rewards fell to $16,100 per exahash per second, marking a 38.4% gross margin—the lowest recorded in recent history.
The increase in hashrate indicates heightened competition among miners, leading to diminished individual rewards. Additionally, transaction fees contributed less than 5% to the total block rewards, further constraining miners' earnings. This trend reflects a broader shift in the dynamics of the Bitcoin mining industry, where increased competition and lower transaction fees are squeezing profit margins.
Looking ahead, the upcoming Bitcoin halving event, scheduled for 2024, will further reduce block rewards, cutting them in half from 6.25 BTC per block to 3.125 BTC. This reduction will force miners to rely even more on transaction fees to sustain their operations. As a result, the mining industry may undergo further consolidation, with smaller players exiting the market or merging with larger ones to remain competitive.
In summary, the combination of increased network hashrate, declining transaction fees, and upcoming block reward halvings presents significant challenges for Bitcoin miners, particularly those with HPC exposure. Without strategic adaptations, such as enhancing operational efficiency or reducing energy costs, these miners may continue to face profitability pressures.
