Ex‑FBI Crypto Expert Chris Wong Joins TRM Labs to Strengthen Fight Against Illicit Finance
Christopher Wong, a former Supervisory Special Agent in the FBI’s Virtual Assets Unit, has joined blockchain‑analytics firm TRM Labs as a global investigator, bringing over a decade of experience in landmark cryptocurrency investigations .
At the FBI, Wong co‑led the investigation into the 2016 Bitfinex hack, which led to the recovery of approximately $3.6 billion — the largest crypto seizure in U.S. history. He also played a vital role in responding to the $600 million Axie Infinity Ronin Bridge breach, attributed to North Korea’s Lazarus Group — a case that prompted the first U.S. sanctions on crypto‑mixing services.
More recently, Wong supported a Department of Justice civil‑forfeiture effort that traced $7.7 million linked to a North Korean IT‑worker laundering network, exposing how operatives used fake identities to funnel funds to Pyongyang.
At TRM, Wong will leverage his law‑enforcement expertise to enhance collaboration with government agencies and improve blockchain tracing tools. Esteban Castaño, TRM’s co‑founder and CEO, described him as “one of the most respected agents in the space,” combining elite investigative skills with deep purpose.
With illicit crypto activity on the rise—from ransomware and darknet markets to state‑sponsored money laundering—Wong’s role arrives at a critical moment. His addition is expected to amplify TRM’s analytical capabilities and provide stronger strategic support to law enforcement and financial institutions worldwide.
