Ethereum Outshines as Crypto Hits Watershed Moment, Says Bitwise

Ethereum (ETH) has emerged as the top-performing crypto asset over the past week, benefiting from what Bitwise Asset Management has called a "watershed moment" for the digital asset industry. The surge in ETH’s price and market dominance is driven by a trifecta of powerful catalysts: a more pro-crypto stance from U.S. policymakers, intensifying institutional demand, and rising speculation around the approval of Ethereum staking ETFs.

ETH’s Strong Weekly Performance

Over the last seven days, Ethereum has gained 9.8%, outperforming Bitcoin (BTC), which rose 5.1% during the same period, according to CoinGecko data. The ETH/BTC ratio also ticked upward, indicating stronger relative momentum in Ethereum’s favor. ETH is currently trading around $3,270, marking its highest level since early March and showing renewed investor confidence.

Washington's Pro-Crypto Pivot

The U.S. government has increasingly signaled a more supportive attitude toward digital assets. Recent bipartisan efforts in Congress, such as the advancement of the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21) and a push for clearer SEC and CFTC jurisdiction, have reassured investors that regulation could soon bring clarity rather than chaos.

Analysts at Bitwise note that this change in sentiment is “reshaping institutional risk tolerance.” Ethereum, with its broad utility across decentralized applications and smart contracts, is poised to benefit more than other assets in this environment.

Institutional Investors Doubling Down

Institutional interest in Ethereum has surged, particularly in anticipation of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) potentially approving spot and staking-based ETH ETFs. BlackRock, Fidelity, Ark Invest, and other major players have all submitted amended S-1 filings in recent weeks, reinforcing the expectation that Ethereum-focused ETFs could hit the market before Q4 2025.

As Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan said in a recent note:

"Ethereum is uniquely positioned to benefit from the next wave of crypto adoption — not just as a store of value, but as a platform for economic activity."

ETH’s staking model has been particularly attractive to fund managers looking for yield-bearing assets. Currently, more than 27 million ETH (approximately $88 billion) is locked in Ethereum’s staking contract, according to Beaconcha.in.

Ethereum Staking ETFs in the Spotlight

One of the most anticipated developments is the possible approval of Ethereum staking ETFs, which would allow investors to gain exposure to both the price movement of ETH and staking rewards. These products could transform ETH into a yield-generating instrument within traditional portfolios — a key differentiator from Bitcoin ETFs, which offer only price exposure.

SEC approval would mark a historic shift in the acceptance of proof-of-stake mechanisms within the U.S. regulatory framework and could spark an influx of institutional capital not seen since Bitcoin’s spot ETF approval in early 2024.

Ethereum’s performance isn’t just a reaction to market news — it's part of a broader realignment in the crypto industry. With Ethereum powering the majority of DeFi platforms, NFT ecosystems, and emerging tokenization models, it’s becoming increasingly essential infrastructure in the digital economy.

The recent surge in activity, both on-chain and in capital markets, signals that Ethereum is no longer just Bitcoin’s little brother. It's positioning itself as the go-to blockchain for the next generation of financial innovation.
