Dollar Index Falls Below 98 for First Time in Three Years — Crypto Markets React
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) dipped below 98 this week — its lowest level since early 2022 — as cooling inflation and mounting expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts weighed on the greenback. This development is fueling optimism across risk markets, particularly in crypto.
🧮 Inflation Slows, Rate Cuts Loom
Headline U.S. inflation came in at 2.4% year-over-year, just under the 2.5% forecast. The softer data reinforced expectations that the Fed may begin cutting interest rates as soon as July. Markets are now pricing in at least one rate cut this summer, with the federal funds rate potentially dropping to the 4.25–4.50% range.
Lower interest rates typically erode the dollar's yield advantage and make non-yielding assets like Bitcoin more attractive. As the dollar weakens, capital often seeks higher returns in equities, commodities, and crypto.
📉 Weaker Dollar, Stronger Crypto?
The dip below 98 on the DXY is significant. Historically, such levels have coincided with major turning points in macro trends. A weakening dollar reduces the opportunity cost of holding alternative assets — and in this cycle, crypto is once again benefiting.
Bitcoin and Ethereum both saw modest gains on the news, with BTC pushing back toward $71,000. Crypto markets have also been buoyed by growing ETF inflows and signs of increased institutional adoption.
🌍 Macro Forces at Play
Geopolitical tensions, trade policy uncertainty, and concerns over U.S. fiscal sustainability are also putting long-term pressure on the dollar. Meanwhile, global central banks have been diversifying away from dollar reserves, further contributing to de-dollarization trends.
🧭 Outlook
If the DXY continues its decline and inflation remains subdued, crypto markets could see further upside. Historically, each break below a major DXY threshold has sparked a significant run in digital assets — and traders are watching closely for a repeat.
