DOJ Links Kansas Bank Collapse to $225M Crypto Fraud
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has seized over $225 million in USDT (Tether) tied to a large-scale international “pig butchering” crypto scam. At the center of this case is Shan Hanes, the former CEO of Heartland Tri-State Bank in Kansas, who embezzled approximately $47 million from the bank and wired it to scammers under the belief he was investing in a crypto opportunity. His actions directly led to the bank’s collapse in July 2023.
According to the DOJ, Hanes was the single largest known victim of this particular scam network. The criminals behind it used deceptive tactics—typically involving relationship-building via social media—to manipulate victims into sending crypto. In Hanes’s case, his stolen bank funds were traced through a web of over 200 OKX exchange accounts, many of which were tied to a laundering ring operated from the Philippines.
This case is significant not only for its size, but because it marks a rare intersection where a white-collar perpetrator is also treated as a high-profile victim. Hanes was sentenced to 24 years in prison in 2024, but DOJ filings show he was manipulated much like hundreds of others in the scheme.
The DOJ’s aggressive move to seize stablecoins like USDT—not just Bitcoin—signals a growing regulatory reach into stablecoin-based fraud. It also reflects a shift toward more robust international cooperation and exchange-level accountability.
