Crypto Trader Launches $2 Million Campaign After MEXC Freezes $3 Million: A Detailed Analysis

In a significant development within the cryptocurrency trading community, a prominent pseudonymous trader known as "White Whale" has initiated a $2 million social media campaign against the MEXC exchange. This move comes after MEXC allegedly froze over $3 million of the trader's funds in July 2025, citing compliance-related concerns. The trader contends that the freeze was a retaliatory action due to outperforming MEXC's external market makers.

Background of the Incident

According to White Whale, their account, containing approximately $3.1 million, was frozen without prior warning or clear justification. The trader asserts that all activities were in compliance with MEXC's terms of service and that they had successfully completed the exchange's Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process. Despite these assurances, MEXC reportedly informed the trader that the review process could take up to one year, without providing any updates or documentation.

In response to this situation, White Whale launched a $2 million campaign aimed at pressuring MEXC to release the frozen funds. The campaign includes a $1 million bounty, which will be distributed among the first 20,000 participants who mint a free non-fungible token (NFT) on the Base network, tag MEXC or its Chief Operating Officer on X (formerly Twitter) with the hashtag #FreeTheWhiteWhale, and change their profile pictures accordingly. The remaining $1 million is pledged to verified charities, with on-chain receipts provided for transparency.

Allegations and Industry Implications

White Whale claims that the fund freeze was a direct result of outperforming MEXC's external market makers—entities that provide liquidity by placing consistent buy and sell orders to ensure smooth trading. The trader alleges that their success in consistently beating these market makers led to the account restrictions. This situation raises concerns about the treatment of high-performing traders and the potential for exchanges to penalize individuals who disrupt their established market-making arrangements.

In a statement to Cointelegraph, a MEXC spokesperson clarified that account restrictions and freezes are imposed strictly because they triggered the exchange's risk control rules, not due to profitability. The spokesperson added that during their review, they identified that certain user funds carried potential risks, leading to temporary withdrawal restrictions and the requirement for advanced KYC verification. The spokesperson further noted that the 12-month review period applies exclusively to accounts involved in coordinated violations, high-risk accounts, or compliance-related risks, and does not affect all users subject to risk control measures.

Broader Market Context

This incident highlights ongoing tensions within the cryptocurrency trading ecosystem, particularly concerning the discretionary control exchanges maintain over account activities. While exchanges argue that such measures are necessary to mitigate risks and ensure compliance, traders often view them as arbitrary and detrimental to fair competition. The situation underscores the need for greater transparency and standardized practices within the industry to protect traders and maintain trust in centralized platforms.

The unfolding dispute between White Whale and MEXC serves as a critical case study in the evolving dynamics of cryptocurrency exchanges and their relationship with traders. As the industry continues to mature, it will be essential for exchanges to balance risk management with fair treatment of traders to foster a healthy and competitive market environment. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for how similar situations are handled in the future
