Crypto Lobby Urges Senate to Prioritize Stablecoin Bill Amid Risk of Unrelated Amendments

As the U.S. Senate advances the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act, a pivotal bill aimed at regulating stablecoin issuers, leading crypto advocacy groups are urging lawmakers to maintain focus on the bill's core objectives. These groups, including the Blockchain Association, Crypto Council for Innovation, Digital Chamber, and DeFi Education Fund, emphasize the importance of avoiding unrelated amendments that could derail the legislation's progress.

A significant concern arises from attempts to attach the Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA) as an amendment to the GENIUS Act. The CCCA aims to increase competition among credit card networks by regulating swipe fees, a move that, while addressing important financial issues, is unrelated to stablecoin regulation. Analysts warn that incorporating such amendments could jeopardize the passage of the GENIUS Act.

The GENIUS Act has already cleared the Senate Banking Committee and passed a procedural vote, indicating substantial bipartisan support. However, the introduction of over 50 amendments, including those unrelated to stablecoins, threatens to stall its momentum. Crypto lobbyists argue that these distractions could undermine the bill's targeted approach to establishing a regulatory framework for stablecoins, which are digital assets pegged to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar.

Furthermore, political dynamics add complexity to the situation. Some Democratic lawmakers have expressed concerns over potential conflicts of interest related to President Trump's ties to the crypto industry, including his family's involvement in launching a stablecoin. While some Democrats have returned to support the bill, citing its importance for consumer protection and regulatory clarity, others remain skeptical.

The outcome of the GENIUS Act holds significant implications for the crypto industry, potentially setting a precedent for future digital asset regulation. As such, industry advocates continue to push for a focused legislative process, free from unrelated amendments, to ensure the bill's successful passage and the establishment of a clear regulatory environment for stablecoins.
