Crypto and Fintech Groups Urge Trump to Block JPMorgan’s ‘Punitive’ Data Access Fees
A coalition of ten major fintech and cryptocurrency trade associations has formally appealed to President Donald Trump, urging him to intervene and prevent JPMorgan Chase from implementing new fees for third-party access to customer banking data. The groups argue that these charges, which could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars annually for data aggregators like Plaid, threaten open banking principles and could disenfranchise millions of consumers.
JPMorgan's decision to charge fintechs for data access has sparked widespread concern among industry stakeholders. Critics argue that such fees could stifle innovation, increase costs for consumers, and hinder the adoption of digital financial services. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has also expressed reservations, questioning whether the agency's previous open banking rule, which prohibited banks from charging for data access, was legally sound.
As the debate continues, the outcome could have significant implications for the future of digital finance and the balance of power between traditional financial institutions and emerging fintech companies.
