CoinShares Secures French MiCA License, Strengthens Regulatory Foothold in EU Amid U.S. Expansion
CoinShares, a leading European investment firm specializing in digital assets, has officially obtained regulatory approval under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework through France’s Financial Markets Authority (AMF). This milestone marks a significant leap in the firm’s long-term strategy to deepen its presence in the EU's maturing crypto economy while simultaneously pursuing growth in the United States.
Regulatory Milestone in the EU
France's AMF granted CoinShares the MiCA license in July 2025, placing the firm among the first wave of digital asset companies fully authorized to operate across the EU under the bloc’s newly implemented regulatory regime. MiCA, which officially came into force on June 30, 2025, establishes standardized rules for crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) across all 27 member states.
With this license, CoinShares is now legally permitted to offer services such as custody of digital assets, portfolio management, trading, and investment advice under a unified regulatory umbrella. The firm can now "passport" these services throughout the EU without undergoing country-specific licensing in each jurisdiction.
CoinShares CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti commented on the development, stating:
“Securing the MiCA license through the AMF validates our compliance-first approach and gives us the regulatory clarity needed to scale across the European market confidently.”
First-Mover Advantage and Institutional Trust
By becoming MiCA-compliant early, CoinShares gains a competitive edge in an environment where many companies are still adjusting to the new legal framework. Regulatory compliance has become a key differentiator, especially for institutional investors seeking trustworthy partners in the volatile crypto space.
This move enhances CoinShares’ standing among traditional financial institutions and positions it as a go-to partner for banks, asset managers, and fintechs exploring tokenization, crypto ETFs, and regulated custody solutions.
U.S. Expansion Strategy Continues
CoinShares' EU regulatory win comes as the firm continues to gain ground in the United States, a market it entered in late 2023. Despite a more fragmented and often adversarial regulatory climate in the U.S., CoinShares has been cautiously building out operations to compete with heavyweight American firms such as Grayscale and Galaxy Digital.
Since early 2024, CoinShares has rolled out several investment vehicles tailored for U.S. institutional clients and has been lobbying for a clearer regulatory pathway akin to MiCA. This dual-market strategy—leveraging the EU’s regulatory certainty while building U.S. market presence—is part of CoinShares' global growth blueprint.
The Broader Context: MiCA Reshaping the European Crypto Landscape
The European Union’s MiCA regulation represents a turning point for the digital asset industry in Europe. As of July 2025, over 60 companies have either applied for or received preliminary approval under the new framework, according to data from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). France, Germany, and the Netherlands have emerged as key jurisdictions for regulatory onboarding.
For CoinShares, early compliance is more than symbolic—it’s a tactical decision to lead in a space where regulatory trust is quickly becoming a currency of its own.
