Coinbase Faces Earnings Pressure Amid Retail Crypto Trading Decline, Say Analysts

Several major Wall Street firms, including Barclays, JPMorgan, Compass Point, and Oppenheimer, have recently revised their Q1 2025 earnings forecasts for Coinbase downward. The consensus among these analysts is that reduced trading volumes—especially among retail investors—will significantly impact the company's revenue performance.

The decline in retail trading activity comes amid a broader cooldown in the cryptocurrency market following a relatively quiet quarter in terms of price volatility and new retail inflows. Trading volumes on Coinbase, which heavily relies on transaction fees from retail users, have dropped as speculative interest has waned. This trend contrasts with the institutional side of the business, which has remained comparatively stable, but still not strong enough to offset the retail shortfall.

Barclays and JPMorgan cited the platform's dependency on retail transactions—still its primary revenue driver—as a key vulnerability. Meanwhile, Compass Point noted that while Coinbase is diversifying into subscription and custodial services, these have not yet scaled to a level that can meaningfully buffer the impact of weak trading revenues. Oppenheimer echoed similar concerns, emphasizing that even with ongoing product expansion, the near-term earnings outlook remains soft.

This earnings pressure adds to Coinbase's broader regulatory and competitive challenges, including increased scrutiny from U.S. regulators and rising competition from decentralized platforms and global exchanges with lower fees.
