Bitcoin Profit-Taking Puts $140K in Focus as Next Key Target, Says CryptoQuant
Bitcoin’s price may need to surge by around 30% from its current levels to match realized profit levels seen earlier in the year, according to new research from on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant. The findings suggest that the next major profit-taking zone for BTC could lie near $140,000—a level that might shape market behavior in the coming months.
Current Data: Where Bitcoin Stands
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading in the $105,000–$108,000 range. Despite its impressive rally so far in 2025, realized profits—actual gains secured when investors sell BTC above their cost basis—are still trailing what was recorded during peaks in 2024.
CryptoQuant’s data shows that the aggregate realized profit this year remains below last year’s figures by a significant margin. The firm estimates that for realized profits to align with the 2024 cycle’s levels, Bitcoin would need to climb another 30%, placing its price near $140,000.
Investor Behavior: HODLing Over Cashing Out
This dynamic indicates that Bitcoin holders, on average, are showing restraint in booking profits despite the price appreciation. Whether this reflects stronger long-term conviction or simply reluctance to exit positions too early remains a point of debate. The lower level of profit realization could be contributing to reduced immediate sell pressure, supporting price stability at current levels.
However, CryptoQuant cautions that should BTC approach $140K, latent profits could start to be unlocked at a faster pace. This could introduce stronger resistance as more investors opt to take gains at that psychologically and technically significant level.
Why $140K Matters
The $140,000 price target is not just a round number—it represents a threshold where realized profits would catch up with prior cycles. Historically, such points often align with heightened sell activity, as holders take advantage of substantial paper gains. The data suggests this level could act as a magnet for profit-taking and potentially mark a local top unless broader market momentum continues to drive prices higher.
For now, Bitcoin’s path toward $140K will depend on a complex mix of market factors, including institutional demand, macroeconomic conditions, and retail investor sentiment. Analysts will be watching closely how realized profit metrics evolve as BTC approaches key resistance zones.
