Bitcoin Hits Record $123,231 as Traders Eye Short Squeeze Toward $125K
Bitcoin (BTC) set a new all-time high on Wednesday, surging to $123,231, after fresh U.S. inflation data strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates as early as September.
The July Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed inflation holding steady at 2.7% year-on-year, matching June’s pace and slightly below economists’ 2.8% forecasts. Month-on-month, prices rose just 0.2%, a modest slowdown from June’s 0.3%.
Macro Tailwinds Drive Momentum
The cooler inflation figures have significantly shifted monetary policy expectations. According to CME FedWatch Tool data, markets are now pricing a 94% probability of a September rate cut—up sharply from under 80% just a week ago. Lower interest rates typically reduce borrowing costs, boost liquidity, and drive demand for risk assets such as Bitcoin and equities.
The rally in crypto also coincides with broader market strength: the S&P 500 closed at a record high, reflecting robust investor sentiment across asset classes.
Short Liquidations Could Push BTC Higher
Market data shows a liquidity cluster between $122,500 and $125,500, containing more than $2 billion in short positions. If Bitcoin maintains upward pressure, these positions could be forcefully liquidated—triggering a “short squeeze” that could propel BTC above $125,000 and potentially into uncharted price territory.
Crypto analyst clusters on X (formerly Twitter) suggest that clearing this range could set the stage for a parabolic rally toward $130K–$135K, provided macro conditions remain supportive.
ETF Inflows Add Institutional Support
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have recorded $65.9 million in net inflows over the past few days, while Ethereum ETFs attracted an impressive $523.9 million. Analysts see this as a sign of growing institutional adoption, with funds using price dips to accumulate positions ahead of expected macro easing.
Market Analysis: Why This Rally Is Different
Unlike earlier surges driven purely by retail speculation, this move is underpinned by:
-
Macroeconomic catalysts – Inflation stability and the growing likelihood of Fed rate cuts.
-
Institutional flows – Persistent ETF inflows supporting price stability.
-
Market mechanics – The potential liquidation of billions in shorts acting as an accelerant.
-
Cross-asset optimism – Equity market records bolstering overall risk appetite.
If the Fed confirms a September rate cut, Bitcoin could sustain its rally and break decisively above the $125K level in the coming sessions. However, analysts caution that the market remains sensitive to sudden shifts in economic data, which could spark volatility.
For now, the confluence of macro tailwinds, ETF demand, and market structure suggests that Bitcoin’s historic run may not be over—and that $130K could be closer than traders think.
